Author of outstanding biographies of Shelley, Coleridge and Dr Johnson, Richard Holmes’s latest work This Long Pursuit has been hailed as 'a masterly performance by the greatest literary biographer of his generation’. Ranging widely over art, science and poetry, he confesses to a lifetime’s obsession with his Romantic subjects, a quest that in This Long Pursuit leads to compelling portraits of scientific and literary women such as Germaine de Stael, Mary Wollstonecraft, and Boswell’s love, the Dutch intellectual Zelide (illustrated below). He also examines the controversial reputations of Romantic figures such as Keats, Shelley, Coleridge and William Blake. "If we are to have any hope of making a better world" he argues, “we must understand it both scientifically and imaginatively”.
Holmes calls the art of biography the vital "handshake across time, cultures, beliefs, disciplines and genders." His talk will offer an insider’s account of a master biographer at work; travelling, teaching, researching, fantasising, forgetting and even ballooning.
