Author of an outstanding biography of Robert Burns and one of Scotland’s finest poets, Professor Robert Crawford was rewarded in his next subject with one of the greatest lives in literature by becoming the first official biographer of TS Eliot. Published to rave reviews, Young Eliot: From St Louis to The Waste Land shows how TS Eliot started out as a subversive outsider and became the most important poet of the twentieth century.
From his childhood in the ragtime city of St Louis right up to the publication in 1922 of his most famous poem, The Waste Land, Robert Crawford reveals how deeply personal were the experiences underlying masterpieces from The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock to The Waste Land.
TS Eliot wanted no biography written, but this book portrays a brilliant, shy and wounded American who defied his parents’ wishes and committed himself to life as an immigrant in England, composing poetry astonishing in its scope and hurt.
